LiveJournal: The First Decade

Just in time for holiday shopping, we're thrilled to announce the release of our ten-year anniversary anthology. This must-read compilation features stories, memes, photos, comics, editorials, graphic content, and more, including:

  2. A look at post-Katrina New Orleans from the journal of Poppy Z. Brite
  3. Gripping narratives, including a poignant reverie on a blind date
  4. Photography that spans the globe, ranging from old-fashioned Polaroids to underwater photography
  5. Mouthwatering dishes from [info]food_porn

What began as a late-night inspiration back in Brad Fitzpatrick's college dorm in 1999 has grown to encompass nearly 25 million users worldwide, with journals and communities covering every conceivable hobby, passion, and topic. To get your copy, please visit the Blurb Bookstore. For updates and entries from book contributors, please join [info]lj_turns10.

Tweaks and enhancements

  • You can now ban a user from all of your communities and journals at once. To access this feature, hover over the person's userpic and choose Ban user everywhere from the drop-down menu.
  • Follow LiveJournal on Twitter!

Give a little to help a lot!

In honor of National AIDS Awareness month, we've added a new charitable vgift. For each red ribbon you purchase for $2.99, we'll donate 100 percent of gross proceeds to IAVI.org (the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative) to support the development and global distribution of an affordable HIV vaccine (we'll cover credit card fees). You can read more about IAVI at [info]lj_cares. While we're on the subject, we raised $740 from our November fundraiser for Love Without Boundaries, which supports emergency healthcare and adoption of Chinese orphans. We thank you for helping us help others.

Photos of the week

We're back with more incredible pictures from our super-talented LiveJournal photographers. Congratulations to [info]ilya_gorokhov, who is the winner of our very first [info]lj_photophile poll.

We hope you'll continue to post, vote, and comment! A gentle request: Please post only one photo at a time and limit size to 350x350 (so images display properly on friends pages). And now, without further ado, get ready to cast your ballot and view more awesome user content after the jump!

bealdor @ 08:25 pm: Here we go again, rush, rush, rush
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Our social life is like the buses my darlings, wait for hours and then loads come along all at once. So its the London Fetish Scene Christmas dinner at Project A on Friday which will of course be a smidgeon riotous and late, Saturday? Oh only Subversion which will mean getting home early Sunday morning and of course then there is the What Katie Did Christmas bash Sunday afternoon/evening. Bad enough but then Tuesday see us off to the London Coliseum to the English National Opera's production of Handel's Messiah courtesy of dear Howard. Does it stop there? Of course not, the following Saturday is of course.... the Skin Two / LAM market at the Royal National Hotel near Russell Square then of course we have to fit in a visit oop North before Xmas too !!!! Ye gods and little fishes its all too too much.
At least Subversions theme shouldn't prove too difficult to assemble an outfit for, xmas fairies, as the little lady said "well that's not a problem for you". Moi a fairy? What on earth gave her that idea i wonder?
Of course on top of all this is the selecting of outfits for photo's.

bealdor @ 05:15 pm: That was the week that was
Well another week slips by. Trauma Monday, a funeral, which thankfully went well. Catching up with long lost relatives etc.
Tuesday, Wednesday not a lot actually and then of course its Thursday, favourite day, photo day. A nice early start, outfits already sorted and its on with the slap. Try a new way with the eyeliner after seeing it on one of those god awful shopping channels flogging Bobbie Brown. Lovely makeup darlings but their colour range is a little understated for a girl like me!
Aaaanyway i digress, Thursday, not too much corsetry to begin with so things go el-rapido. Take a break for an hour or so then back to it while the little lady is out. Well over two hundred shots but of course things slow down when corsets are involved and overall i manage twelve changes of outfit.
Have to sort the hard drive out Friday, space is disappearing fast with all this picture taking especially with going over to raw format!

The little lady is still suffering with the ibs so the weekend will be a trifle muted, just as well there is not a lot on, unlike next week and the run-up to Christmas!!!

miss_soap @ 01:09 pm: Wicket
Wicket went missing on Saturday 21st November from the New North Road area of Islington. I am so upset and feel so frustrated that there isn't more I am able to do to find him.

We've flyered the neighbourhood, put posters up, alerted the local vets and Animal Search UK and been out every night looking/calling for him.

I miss him so much :(

lucifire @ 07:16 am: off to Athens tomorrow. Gig @ Spookshow on Saturday night. Should I bring the Weimar show? Taramasalata!

Photos of the week

We're so delighted with the immense talent of our growing, global [info]lj_photophile community that we've decided to introduce a poll. Each week, we'll choose a half-dozen photos (based on user comments and staff feedback) and ask you to select a photo of the week. The winning photo will be announced in the next newsletter. If possible, please limit photo size to 350x350 to ensure that images display properly on friends pages. We want to thank you again (and again!) for sharing your passion.

doc__holliday, posting in cirque_enciel @ 09:02 am: Busker's World
an interesting article researched last year, written this year by a journalist who followed a bunch of us for a couple of weeks. Some fact-twisting aside, I think it's a pretty good read. Although, for any of you out there looking to come to Toronto to work, this year some heavier laws were enacted against internationals so good luck with that! :p

Buskers World.

lucifire @ 10:49 am: my paper for kleinkunst II
crikey! sent if off at the 11th hour, here's my paper outline for kleinkunst II at the roundhouse next monday... (hoping it still reads ok once i've had some sleep!)

Grotesque Burlesque: Beauty and her inner beast.

Should we expect beauty to behave beautifully? Luci discusses piercing the feminine façade to find the animal within. Through her glamourised freak shows and burlesque flesh-hook suspensions, Luci has delighted in offering a juxtaposition of the disgusting and the beautiful. In this paper she discusses how this affects the gaze. In the vicarious thrills of the audience through the agony and ecstasy of the performer, do we suffer more vicariously when the victim is beautiful, or female? Luci proposes that whilst it is not necessary to suffer to be beautiful (or to be beautiful to suffer), the triumph of the body over pain can be magnificent and the victory of the bestial over the civilised, humbling.

I'm also performing "Tango Sangre" with Dave Tusk

Tango Sangre is a darkly romantic piece, utterly specific to the performers and their real-life marriage. Lucifire and Dave Tusk combine choreography, body-play and taboo in a manifestation of their extroverted love that is at times both uncomfortable and moving. First performed to an almost entirely male audience at a hardcore, gay S. & M. club, this short, intense piece is anything but fluffy and contains little of the pair’s trademark humour. Since its premiere in Vauxhall, it has been performed in Berlin, Rome, Latvia and Japan; each time, the romantic nature of the work has been markedly commented upon.

here's details of the event...
